I can't think of a use case for RDM's in virtual mode, other than a Custer-in-a-Box (MSCS) or an already existing LUN which cannot be converted for whatever reasons, but needs to be snapshotted. In past times RDM had performance advantages over VMFS and that might have been a use case, but with current versions this advantage has gone.
