Workstation 9.0.2 Linux Issue

Fellow Community Members,

I was speaking to a client whom is running VMware Workstation 9.0.2 under Linux and has installed a Windows 7 guest. It appears that as far as he can tell the GUI for VMware Tools is no longer available and was wondering the best manner to conduct a compacting of his Windows 7 guest vmdks (they are in 2GB split files).

Does he defragment first? If so, using the Windows 7 defragment utility, the vmware-vdiskmanager "-d" option from Linux, or using vmware-tools command line from within the Windows guest, or using the "Defrag" option in the Linux VMware Workstation menues?

If he is going to use the "Compact" option from within the Linux VMware Workstation menues, must do some prep or "zero out" of unallocated space first to gain maximal efficiency of the compaction or is VMware smart enough to do that these days?

Thanks,

Stuart

P.S. - Interesting factoid: "VMware" is a spelling error when typing on this website!
