Backup / copy of a thin, nonpersistent disk?

We have a VM which includes a thin allocated, nonpersistent independent disk. Is it possible to copy the unprovisioned version of this disk? When viewing this disk in the datastore browser it's ~95MB in size and the provisioned size is 25GB. When downloading from the datastore browser, it downloads as a 25GB file... is it possible to get this in the unprovisioned 95MB size?
