According to Virtual machine hardware versions (1003746) there is no virtual hardware version 5. I have no problem seeing the Thumbnails when using any of the hardware version in that VMware KB under VMware Workstation 8. So I changed a version 3 manually to 5 and I was still able to see the Thumbnail, so I'd say that wasn't the issue.
