The general steps are provided for each method, but specifics may vary by version.
Method 1
1) Power off the VM
2) Run VMWare Standalone Converter
a. Specify Source / Machine Type
i. Type: VMWare Infrastructure virtual machine
ii. Server Connection information
1. Server: Specify the vCenter Server or ESX Host
2. Enter appropriate login and password
iii. Click Next
b. Specify Source / Machine Name
i. Select the virtual machine
ii. Click Next
c. Specify Destination / Destination Type
i. VMWare Infrastructure virtual machine
ii. Server Connection information
1. Server: Specify the vCenter Server or ESX Host
2. Enter appropriate login and password
iii. Click Next
d. Specify Destination / Host-Resource
i. In the left pane select the destination ESX host
ii. Enter the new VM name
iii. Select destination store
iv. Select VM version
v. Click Next
e. View / Edit Options
i. Data to copy
1. Click Edit
2. Data copy type: Select volumes to copy
3. Edit Target Size as needed for each disk.
ii. Click Next
f. Ready to Complete
i. Click Finish
3) Wait as the new virtual machine is created
4) Turn on the new virtual machine
5) Delete / rename the old virtual machine as needed.
Method 2
If the VM must remain powered on you can follow these steps.
1) Leave the VM Powered On.
2) Run VMWare Standalone Converter
a. Specify Source / Machine Type
i. Type: Powered-ON Machine
ii. Select A remote machine
1. IP Address or Name: Enter the ip address or DNS Name
2. Enter the appropriate Username and password
3. Select the appropriate OS
iii. Click Next
b. The rest of the configuration is the same as Method 1
